Platt Pro 5% bio identical Progesterone cream has been a miracle for me. I just turned 50 years old and I'm in perimenopause. I had a period that didn't stop for two months straight with extremely heavy bleeding. I became very anemic almost needing a blood transfusion. Had ultrasound and biopsy done at gyne - everything checked out fine but doctor couldn't stop bleeding. Next step from doctor would be to prescribe synthetic hormone pills and a procedure to cauterize my uterus to stop bleeding. I wasn't ok with that. In the meantime I found Dr. Platt's website and read all his blog articles which made total sense to me. I had obviously been suffering from high estrogen and low progesterone for the past 10 years (hence the heavy/long periods and thickened endometrium). I ordered the Progesterone cream and in three days the bleeding completely stopped and my periods became regular again. What is the difference between Cream vs. Oral Progesterone?+−
Many people ask whether they should use oral progesterone or cream. When you take oral progesterone, it goes straight to the liver where it is converted into allopregnanolone - a derivative of progesterone. It is recognized on a lab test as progesterone, but is not able to attach to progesterone receptor sites s effectively losing approximately 80-85% efficacy. The side effects cause drowsiness, which is why they recommend taking it at night. The cream, however, enters your bloodstream and bypasses the liver which explains why it is much more effective than oral progesterone.
What is the difference between synthetic and bio-identical hormones?+−
It is important to differentiate between natural, bio-identical progesterone and synthetic progestogens. Bio-identical progesterone is identical to the progesterone produced in the body. Progestogens are synthetic, and are the ones that are found in birth control pills, hormonal IUD's, and drugs like Provera. Progesterone receptors will not transport progestogens to the nucleus of a cell and thereby they can never duplicate the action of natural progesterone. They are also responsible for almost 100% of the listed side effects attributed to synthetic progesterone, including cancer.
