As many of my readers understand, I would like to change healthcare in this country. In order to accomplish this, I feel that it is important that healthcare providers be given an alternative approach to how they practice medicine.  This blog is dedicated to those providers who are frustrated with the present system. The doctor practicing today can no longer afford to ignore bio-identical hormone replacement therapy(BHRT). Many patients are demanding BHRT, and if it is not provided by their health care practitioner, they will seek care elsewhere. Very often, in order to meet this demand, practitioners will attend [...]

HRT: They Still Don’t Get It

October 6th, 2012|Categories: Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause|Tags: , , , |

The latest study on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) was released at the annual meeting of the North American Menopause Society. Their findings were as follows: there was no indication of any adverse cardiovascular effects, and that HRT should be used in women only to try and relieve menopausal symptoms. This study utilized two different types of estrogen. One was a low dose of Premarin, and the other was Estrace given as a patch. In both cases, they utilized a bio-identical progesterone preparation which was an improvement over the synthetic progestin that was used in the WHI study. However, they [...]

Hormone Replacement – Which Doctor Do I Choose

August 4th, 2012|Categories: Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause, Hormone Testing|Tags: , , |

Hormones control every system in the body. Sometimes, they can be out of  balance from an early age, but will certainly be out of balance as you get older. Knowing this, it is somewhat surprising that doctors receive very little information about hormones while they are training, and certainly no information about bio- identical hormones. Practitioners who become involved with natural hormone replacement basically have to rely on two sources of information - studying books on hormones and/or going to seminars. Frankly, neither option provides enough knowledge to be proficient from a wellness standpoint. The reason for this is [...]

The Hormonal Abuse of Women

One of the tragedies associated with our healthcare system is that there is no preventive medicine.  Many people, doctors included, feel that giving flu shots and providing mammograms is preventive medicine.  Well, flu shots do not prevent the flu and mammograms certainly do not prevent breast cancer. I have been involved with hormones since my mother died of breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 61.  It concerns me that the horrific medical care that she was subjected to 35 years ago is still considered the standard of care by many of today’s doctors. Up until this point, [...]

Adrenaline Series #4

Adrenaline and Weight When it comes to adrenaline, the effect it has on weight may cause it to go in either direction.  This hormone can increase metabolism and give a person an increase in energy which can promote the burning of fat.  Children diagnosed with ADHD that are hyperactive are usually on the thin side.  Later on, in high school and college, they are often involved in sports and again, do not have weight issues.  Professional athletes have excess adrenaline as do people designated as workaholics and Type A personalities.  These groups will generally not have weight issues. However, [...]

Enhance Your Wellness and Longevity and Prevent Aging

Metabolic Solutions for Wellness and Longevity         As people get older, things change. The skin becomes less elastic, wrinkles form, sagging occurs. The hair becomes less full and changes color. Fat starts accumulating and it's a lot harder to get rid of.  Aches and pains develop in the joints, osteoporosis occurs, coronary artery disease becomes a concern, muscle mass starts to atrophy, the immune system deteriorates allowing cancer to start winning the war, sexual interest (the libido) becomes non-existent and sexual abilities dwindle.  And this is only a partial list of what occurs.  Until recently, all these changes [...]

Do BC Pills Really Prevent Cancer of Ovaries and Colon?

March 13th, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause, Hormone Testing|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

REGARDING THE DR. OZ SHOW ON BIRTH CONTROL PILLS On Friday, March 9, 2012, the Dr. Oz show talked about how birth control pills provide a 50% reduction in ovarian and colorectal cancer if used for more than 5 years. He had two gynecologists on his program who claimed that BC pills taken for a total of 5 years over a woman's lifetime will confer these benefits. I have to admit that I am somewhat skeptical of these claims for a number of reasons. The 1st has to do with credibility. During the introduction of these women it was [...]

Incontinence in Women

February 17th, 2012|Categories: Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause, Excessive Adrenaline, ADHD/ADD, Children and Teens|Tags: , , , , |

There are basically two types of incontinence in women, a condition manifested by unwanted leakage of urine. The 1st type is called stress incontinence.  It is found in women who have lost muscle control around the urethra, and, as a result, experience unwanted urine leakage under stress.  The most common factors creating this problem are the following: coughing, sneezing, laughing in public, and jumping type exercises. It can be found in multiparous women- i.e. women who have had three or more pregnancies - as well as women in the menopause.  It is most often treated with certain medications such [...]

Hormone Therapy for Men

February 16th, 2012|Categories: Men and Hormone Therapy, Menopause/Andropause|Tags: , , , , , , , |

In some ways, hormone replacement in men is more important than it is for women. The most important hormone to replace in men is testosterone. It usually peaks around the age of 20, and then starts to decline yearly. Around the ages of 50 to 60 it has often decreased to a level where symptoms become noticeable. The classic changes that occur most often relate to a decrease in libido (loss of interest in sex) and erectile dysfunction. However, there are other aspects to testosterone replacement that men should be aware of. For example, almost 100% of men that [...]

Progesterone: A Very Special Hormone/ Medicine is Big Business

January 30th, 2012|Categories: Menopause/Andropause, Breast Cancer Prevention, Excessive Adrenaline|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

By Michael E. Platt, M.D. It is surprising how little the medical community knows about progesterone, especially the consequences of a progesterone deficiency. In many cases, these consequences can be prevented with the use of natural progesterone replacement. It is fairly easy to diagnose women with low progesterone levels because these women are the ones who have PMS, severe menstrual cramps, headaches with their periods, and breast tenderness. They will be estrogen-dominant and very often will wind up with complications such as fibroids in the uterus and fibrocystic disease of the breast. A recent article in the British medical journal, [...]

Hormonal Balance Is Important For Both Sexes!

Every system in the body, at any age, is controlled by hormones. Accordingly, at any age, hormones can be out of balance and this factor can give rise to certain symptoms, or,moreseriously, certain conditions. In spite of their importance to our health, doctors receive relatively little information about hormones during their training. Instead, emphasis is placed on using prescription drugs to treat the symptoms of disease rather than getting hormones into balance to eliminate the problem. To demonstrate how pervasive hormonal imbalance is, two columns will be presented. One will represent the symptoms that can occur, and the next [...]
