Common misdiagnosis between Adrenal Fatigue and Adrenal Dominance

June 8th, 2019|Categories: Uncategorized, Books and Resources|Tags: |

Adrenal fatigue is a diagnosis used mostly in alternative medicine, usually among naturopathic physicians. The diagnosis is based on the theory that the adrenal gland, if underfunctioning, can fail to produce sufficient quantities of cortisol. Treatment often involves prescribing cortisol in addition to addressing diet, timing of eating, and amount of rest. I have two concerns about this diagnosis and its treatment. First, adrenal fatigue may actually be adrenaline dominance, a condition of adrenal overfunctioning rather than underfunctioning. Second, prescribing cortisol for a condition possibly already associated with a high cortisol level may have unintended consequences. Cortisol, if given [...]

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder – PMDD

[The following is an excerpt from my book  "Adrenaline Dominance", which is now available on Amazon.com or on my website: www.plattwellness.com] _______________________________________________________________ PMDD is a condition that has a tremendous impact on the quality of life of the woman who has it – as well as on the people who surround her. These are the women who for ten days out of the month, no one can live with them. Comparable to the other conditions I have written about, it also falls into the category of  “we don’t know what causes it”. However, when I describe the symptoms, the cause [...]

“The Platt Protocol for Hormone Balancing” – a wellness manual for healthcare practitioners

October 25th, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause, Hormone Testing, Excessive Adrenaline, ADHD/ADD|Tags: , , , , , , , |

As many of my readers understand, I would like to change healthcare in this country. In order to accomplish this, I feel that it is important that healthcare providers be given an alternative approach to how they practice medicine.  This blog is dedicated to those providers who are frustrated with the present system. The doctor practicing today can no longer afford to ignore bio-identical hormone replacement therapy(BHRT). Many patients are demanding BHRT, and if it is not provided by their health care practitioner, they will seek care elsewhere. Very often, in order to meet this demand, practitioners will attend [...]

Women and Heart Disease

June 15th, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Hormonal Balance and Wellness|Tags: , , , , , , , |

People just don't get it - we live in a country that has little interest in improving healthcare. They forget that the medical system is a multi-trillion dollar a year industry that thrives on disease and illness, not on wellness. Recently, Barbra Streisand has raised $22 million to fund a new addition to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center that will be involved with heart health for women. On paper it makes sense because heart attacks are the number one cause of death in women. In fact, heart attacks are responsible for 6 times more deaths than any other cause of death [...]

PSA Tests – To Do or Not To Do

May 31st, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Men and Hormone Therapy, Hormone Testing|Tags: , , , , , , |

This week the 2011 US Preventive Services Task Force draft policy for prostate cancer was released. . They gave PSA tests a D rating, indicating that it was one of the following: 1) of no benefit 2) it was not recommended, or 3) that the harm outweighs the good. The concern appears to be related to the fact that an elevated PSA test often leads to unnecessary biopsies, which in turn can lead to treatments that can result in severe side effects.  These concerns are valid. However, to encourage the elimination of a PSA screening is similar to “throwing [...]

The Hormonal Abuse of Women

April 26th, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause, Breast Cancer Prevention|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

One of the tragedies associated with our healthcare system is that there is no preventive medicine.  Many people, doctors included, feel that giving flu shots and providing mammograms is preventive medicine.  Well, flu shots do not prevent the flu and mammograms certainly do not prevent breast cancer. I have been involved with hormones since my mother died of breast cancer in 1980 at the age of 61.  It concerns me that the horrific medical care that she was subjected to 35 years ago is still considered the standard of care by many of today’s doctors. Up until this point, [...]

Vitamin D3 Toxicity?

The Making of a New Urban Legend There are many urban legends in medicine that actually have no basis in fact.  But once they become ingrained in medical lore, few doctors will question whether they are accurate. Examples of what I feel are urban legends include the following: 1) the lowering of cholesterol prevents heart attacks, 2) flu shots prevent the flu, 3) vitamins and other supplements will only result in expensive urine, 4) natural progesterone does not have to be replaced after women have had a hysterectomy, and 6) blood tests should be done in a fasting state [...]

Do BC Pills Really Prevent Cancer of Ovaries and Colon?

March 13th, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Hormonal Balance and Wellness, Menopause/Andropause, Hormone Testing|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

REGARDING THE DR. OZ SHOW ON BIRTH CONTROL PILLS On Friday, March 9, 2012, the Dr. Oz show talked about how birth control pills provide a 50% reduction in ovarian and colorectal cancer if used for more than 5 years. He had two gynecologists on his program who claimed that BC pills taken for a total of 5 years over a woman's lifetime will confer these benefits. I have to admit that I am somewhat skeptical of these claims for a number of reasons. The 1st has to do with credibility. During the introduction of these women it was [...]

Why Supplements?

February 23rd, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources|Tags: , , , |

Doctors receive almost no training on the clinical application of natural hormones and receive almost no training on the use of supplements to enhance health. Very often they are told that supplements only give you “expensive urine” – a thought frequently passed on to their patients. And yet, the nutraceutical business represents a 40 billion dollar per year industry. This figure is of concern to the pharmaceutical industry who feels their business is infringed upon and also may be a concern to the business of medicine, an entity which appears to thrive on disease and illness. As I have [...]

Hormone Testing: Blood Test or Saliva?

February 13th, 2012|Categories: Books and Resources, Hormone Testing|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , |

When I was practicing medicine, I had the option of suggesting a number of possible ways to test hormone levels in patients. Each had their own advantages and disadvantages. I will be discussing each, with no relationship to preference. Saliva testing is a popular method utilized by many practitioners. After receiving the kit, it has the advantage of being a test done at home. Depending on the tests being ordered, up to four specimens are submitted obtained at various times during the day. My own feeling is that it may be a useful kind of test from hormone screening [...]
