Every system in the body, at any age, is controlled by hormones. Accordingly, at any age, hormones can be out of balance and this factor can give rise to certain symptoms, or,moreseriously, certain conditions.

In spite of their importance to our health, doctors receive relatively little information about hormones during their training. Instead, emphasis is placed on using prescription drugs to treat the symptoms of disease rather than getting hormones into balance to eliminate the problem.

To demonstrate how pervasive hormonal imbalance is, two columns will be presented. One will represent the symptoms that can occur, and the next will give a list of medical conditions caused by hormones out of balance.

Please note: The ‘Symptoms’ column does not necessarily relate to the ‘Conditions’ column next to it.

Symptoms                                                                                          Medical Conditions

Fatigue Diabetes
Anger or road rage ADHD
Dry skin, such as cracked heels; poor nails Hypertension
Sleepiness between 3:00 and 4:00 pm Depression
Loss of libido Insomnia
Fluid retention Breast, ovarian, or uterine cancer
Urinary frequency or urgency Prostate cancer
Hot flashes, night sweats Migraine headaches
Difficulty focusing Asthma
Loss of memory Fibroids, endometriosis
Constipation/diarrhea Fibrocystic disease or ovarian cysts
Bed wetting Obesity
Low back pain Erectile dysfunction
Teeth grinding Fibromyalgia
Interstitial cystitis
Restless leg syndrome, TMJ
Bipolar disorder
PTSD
Irritable bowel syndrome

Interestingly, every one of these symptoms or conditions can often be eliminated by getting hormones back into balance. Certain hormones create problems from over-production, namely adrenaline, estrogen, and insulin. Other hormones cause problems by being deficient, such as progesterone, thyroid, and testosterone.

As stated before, every age group is affected.  Unfortunately, hormone issues in children and teenagers are ignored. Instead, they wind up on medications that always make their problems worse. Children are put on stimulants or anti-depressants to treat ADHD instead of programs to lower their adrenaline. Teenage girls are put on birth control pills to help with cramps, and PMS, instead of natural progesterone to eliminate their symptoms.  Adults are placed on pain medications for fibromyalgia or anti-depressants for depression, instead of reducing adrenaline.

And then you have type II diabetics who are placed on medications to increase insulin, or are put on insulin, even though in most cases insulin causes diabetes as well as most of complications of diabetes.  In addition, insulin is the hormone that creates fat around the middle and speeds up the aging process.

These are just a few of the examples of why knowledge of hormones is imperative to get a person healthy. Those teenage girls placed on birth control pills can eventually end up with polycystic ovaries, fibroids, endometriosis, problems conceiving, miscarriages, morning sickness with their pregnancies, postpartum depression, plus other problems – all related to low progesterone levels.

I mentioned adrenaline – a hormone that is rarely spoken about. Creative people, such as Hollywood movie stars, have a lot of adrenaline as a neurotransmitter in the brain. It enhances their creativity, but when over-produced it becomes the fight-or-flight hormone creating anger issues and the need for drugs or alcohol to chill out. Names of people with apparent adrenaline issues might include Stephen Tyler, Alex Baldwin, Michael Jackson, Lindsay Lohan, and Heath Ledger. Weight gain in creative people is always hormonally induced; for example: Oprah Winfrey and Kirstie Alley.

It is fairly easy to get patients well again, when you treat the causation of their problems. Unfortunately,it isn’t easy finding a doctor that is knowledgeable about hormones beyond giving women treatment for menopausal symptoms. For those of you who are interested in doing your own due diligence, I have written a reader friendly book called, “The Miracle of Bio-Identical Hormones.”  It has received four national book awards and is the number one selling hormone book in Germany. It has been translated into four other languages. Actual patients, that many of you can relate to, tell their stories, before and after taking natural hormones.

The book talks about many conditions that can benefit by balancing hormones, such as:  ADHD, bi-polar disorders, weight problems, depression, fibromyalgia, stress incontinence, migraine headaches, diabetes, anger issues, and more. What becomes evident is that when one is in hormonal balance changes occur: menopausal symptoms disappear, such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and weight gain. Men should experience more energy, regain their joie de vie, and improve problems with erectile dysfunction. Sleeping problems should disappear in both sexes.

Additional information may be obtained by visiting my website, www.plattwellness.com.  You may want to take the hormone questionnaire which can illustrate certain hormones that may be out of balance. My book is available on the website or from Amazon.  If you are a doctor, I have written a manual about my approach to the balancing of hormones. If you are interested, please make inquiries at my office. This year, 2012, I have plans to publish this manual in a self-study format, along with conference calls and webinars to assist you in helping your patients achieve hormonal balance and wellness. I will be sharing with you my 20 year experience in helping others attain hormonal balance. We invite your inquiries and registration.

For the general public I am available for consultation in person in my office or by phone or Skype. In a short time you will be able to join me on conference calls to educate you on the mechanics of your body and benefits of hormonal balance. Bodies function better when balance is achieved hormonally. Keep a watch on my site for a list of doctors in your area that are eager and willing to work with me in a joint consult to help you achieve wellness. We invite you to help this list grow. Contact us to make your suggestion or, if you are a doctor, please contact us to get on our growing website list.

Also, see a list of lab work that I recommend for your wellness/hormone consultation with your doctor. The list can be found on this blog; it is entitled “Recommended Blood Tests for Hormonal Balance.” To find easily article easily, type this title in the search button here on my blog site.

I wish you wellness and hormonal balance in 2012 and ongoing. At Platt Wellness we look forward to helping you to get your body in balance with our outreach plans and education. All inquiries and feedback are welcome.

Wishing you the best health yet,
