Benfotiamine reduces advanced glycation end-products (AGE) which some people feel is the main cause of aging. Glycation is the process of combining glucose to protein which can cause an increase in atherosclerosis, cataracts, nerve damage, kidney damage, heart damage, etc. It may be especially important in diabetics because they have higher sugar levels that can be incorporated into the glycation (aging) process.
It is felt that benfotiamine may improve or prevent various dementias and help with lowering blood pressure, and help shingles. Since it prevents the buildup of lactic acid, it is especially helpful with fibromyalgia. It is a derivative of the B vitamin called thiamine. What makes this supplement different from water-soluble thiamine (B1) is that Benfotiamine is fat soluble, which means your body can absorb and use more of this essential nutrient. It plays a key part in carbohydrate metabolism within every cell of your body and that’s the process that helps your cells handle sugar.
